Venice authorities have said they will extend the day tourist entry fee into next year.
The tourist fee was implemented earlier this year as part of a trial.
One of Italy’s most beautiful cities, Venice has been struggling under the number of visitors every year. The system was put in place in an attempt to curb the number of day-trippers. Local residents, workers, minors and those staying in accommodation within Venice are exempt.
Tourists visiting for the first time have been required to buy a €5 (£4/$5) ticket for entry into the UNESCO World Heritage site.
The scheme was used on 29 days during 2024 to try out the scheme including busy weekends and national holidays. Venice Mayor Luigi Brugnaro said this will be increased to 54 next year according to AFP.
Tourists will need to book at least four days in advance to pay €5, though this will rise to €10 for last minute bookings.
Across 15 of the days that the entry fee system was in action, there was an average of 16,500 fee payers.
Additionally, in its first month of operation, the scheme raised €1.23m.
