World music festival WOMAD is to take a year off in 2025 as it formulates future plans for its new home location.
WOMAD founder Peter Gabriel confirmed that its other events will be held as planned next year, but that its main UK festival, which attracts around 40,000 attendees, would take a break.
WOMAD staged more than 300 festivals around the world during what has been its 42nd year. In 2025 it will put on WOMADelaide, WOMAD New Zealand and WOMAD Cáceres with plans for further events in Las Palmas, Brazil and Chile. It is also exploring a special UK event for next year to deliver a taste of the WOMAD experience.
Gabriel said: “WOMAD, like many festivals and events, has seen some challenges post-Covid and we are now engaged in the process of re-evaluating, regenerating and reinvigorating everything we do – and where we want to go in the future. We’re delighted to say we’ll be announcing our new plans over the next few weeks.”
Gabriel confirmed that WOMAD’s new home is close to the Charlton Park site in Witshire that has been its home for the last 17 years.
WOMAD, which dates back to 1982, features World music, blues, jazz, hip hop and other styles of music. It was held in Reading for many years before relocating to Wiltshire in 2007.
