Maharashtra Cyber, the Indian state’s online police, has issued a notice to ticketing company BookMyShow requiring it to implement strict measures for upcoming concerts.
It has suggested the sale of name-based tickets, which would make them valid for only the buyer and their party, for the January shows of Coldplay in Mumbai.
The notice was issued to prevent exploitation of fans who buy tickets from online platforms, as reported by several Indian media outlets.
Police said that there are an increasing number of complaints across online forums and social media about problems faced when booking tickets for high-profile events.
Many people reported unresponsive websites during the booking period, with authorities stating that it leads to a black market of tickets at much higher prices.
Maharashtra Cyber claims that existing measures taken by some platforms to avoid this are insufficient.
The notice marks the latest occurrence of BookMyShow crossing paths with the Indian authorities.
Last month, the company’s chief operating officer Anil Makhija was questioned by Mumbai police for four hours as authorities began an investigation into criminal complaints concerning the on-sale of tickets for the future Coldplay concerts.
The British band is set to play in the city’s DY Patil Stadium on January 18 and 19.
BookMyShow has been accused of committing organised crime, cheating, and criminal breach of trust by lawyer Amit Vyas.
He argues that the company has conspired with the concerts’ promoter Live Nation to wrongly black-market tickets on Viagogo.
Vyas further claims that tens of thousands of bots were allowed to circumvent the virtual queue for tickets.
