British rock band Coldplay are set to play their biggest ever gig at Narendra Modi Stadium, the world’s largest arena in India.

Coldplay will play Ahmedabad’s vast 132,000-capacity stadium in January 2025, adding to three previously announced shows in Mumbai. These are Coldplay’s first-ever concerts in India, although the band has previously headlined festivals in the country.

The Coldplay concert will be the first music show to be staged at the Narendra Modi Stadium, which opened in 2020 on the former site of the Motera Cricket Stadium, which was demolished in 2015.

The venue — named in honour of India’s Prime Minister — is primarily a cricket stadium, with its record attendance being 101,566 for the 2022 Indian Premier League final between Gujarat Titans and Rajasthan Royals.

Coldplay’s Music Of The Spheres tour has already been named as the largest-ever rock tour by Billboard Boxscore after it surpassed $1bn in gross takings. As of August 2024, some 8.8 million tickets had been sold for the tour since it opened in March 2022.

Mumbai ticketing woes

Tickets for the Ahmedabad show will be made available via BookMyShow on November 16. BookMyShow faced numerous criminal complaints, and itself contacted Mumbai police, in the aftermath of the Mumbai on-sale in September.

The company’s platform crashed due to huge demand when the on-sale commenced earlier and there was an outcry over tickets immediately appearing at vastly inflated prices on resale sites.

Many claimed that BookMyShow worked in cahoots with resale sites such as Viagogo and Gigsberg to profit from fans’ desperation to see Coldplay. A complaint filed with Mumbai police’s white collar crime unit by prominent lawyer Amit Vyas made just that claim, according to a Medianama report.

However, BookMyShow has hit back by distancing itself from resellers and making a criminal complaint of its own.

In a statement, the group said: “BookMyShow has no association with any ticket selling / reselling platforms such as Viagogo and Gigsberg or third-party individuals for the purpose of reselling of Coldplay’s Music Of The Spheres World Tour 2025 in India.”

Maharashtra police’s cyber wing has since issued a notice to BookMyShow, asking it to implement strict measures including sale of name-based tickets for the Coldplay concerts and other shows.
