Broadway not only witnessed its highest-grossing Christmas week since 2018 during the festive period, but also saw the theatre production of Wicked gross $5m (£4m/€4.8m).

The figure means that the show is the first in Broadway history to rake in $5m in one week according to the week’s grosses. Wicked overtook The Lion King’s previous record of $4.3m.

Wicked is currently being staged at Gershwin Theatre.

Christmas week – December 22-29 – brought in a total of $55.8m for Broadway, with 306,180 theatregoers paying an average ticket price of $182.32 for the 33 currently running shows.

Wicked also boasted the most expensive average ticket at $290.61, followed by The Lion King at $279, Hamilton at $723 and The Outsiders at $239.

Behind Wicked, The Lion King raked in $4.2m, Hamilton brought in $2.9m, Aladdin scored $2.8m and The Great Gatsby rounded off the top five with $2.6m.

Some 26 of the 33 productions running brought in over $1m in grosses during Christmas week. Additionally, 29 of the 33 shows played to an audience of 90% and higher.
