Hong Kong’s Kai Tak Sports Park is set to welcome roughly 18,000 people tomorrow (Saturday) for the main stadium’s first trial concert.
Kai Tak Stadium previously welcomed just over 10,000 guests for its first test event earlier this month – a university rugby sevens tournament.
Alongside the 50,000-capacity stadium, the Kai Tak Sports Park complex also includes the 10,000-seat Kai Tak Arena and the 5,000-capacity Youth Sports Ground.
“Every test event will be challenging because we are increasing both the scale and sophistication of the individual events,” said Hong Kong Sports Commissioner, George Tsoi Kin-pan, in a press briefing.
“This is the first non-sports event to be held in the main stadium, and we hope we can have the opportunity to test out all the different elements and the coordination among our different staff.”
Titled ‘Four in Love’, the charity concert will feature singers Jay Fung Wan-him, Cloud Wan Ho-ying, Jace Chan Hoi-wing and local band, Dear Jane. The concert will last around an hour and a half, and will begin at 18:00 local time. Doors will open two hours before the concert begins.
In December, the indoor Kai Tak Arena held a music festival with some 5,500 in attendance, and the Youth Sports Ground hosted its first test event in October – a second-tier men’s football match.
Kai Tak Stadium is set to host the Hong Kong stage of World Rugby Sevens in late March, which is relocating from Hong Kong Stadium. British band Coldplay will perform four concerts at the stadium the following month.
Kai Tak Sports Park was designed by Populous and will be operated by ASM Global. It is due to open in the first quarter of this year.
