Around 230,000 tickets have been sold so far for this year’s World Athletics Championships in Tokyo, with general ticket sales set to begin on January 31.

The 230,000 tickets were snapped up during a successful pre-sales phase.

The event is due to take place from September 13-21 with more than 700,000 tickets available in total.

Organisers have priced 70% of the tickets at ¥10,000 (£52/$64/€62) in an effort to make the Championships more accessible to a wider audience.

In addition, 2,025 tickets priced at ¥2,025 will be offered for each session.

Morning sessions will cost between ¥2,500 and ¥15,000, while weekday evening sessions are priced between ¥4,000 and ¥30,000. Weekends and holiday evening sessions will cost between ¥5,000 and ¥50,000.

“With the launch of general ticket sales, more seats will be available for all sessions and categories, including new seating areas in Premium 2 and Category A,” read a statement from the organisers.

“For the first time, ticket holders will be able to choose their own seats, and additional tickets for seat categories that sold out during the pre-sale will be made available again.

“Hospitality packages offering premium services such as food, drinks, and lounge access will be available for purchase, where specified ticket packages will also come with merchandise and giveaways. These packages can be purchased by both corporate and individual spectators, with private room plans tailored specifically for corporate clients.”

The event is set to be hosted in the Japan National Stadium which has a capacity of 68,000 for athletics.
