Thai authorities are reviewing security protocols for major events after two tourists died and several drug-related arrests were made at the inaugural Electric Daisy Carnival (EDC) Thailand 2025 festival.
The festival in Phuket was marred by the deaths of a 32-year-old Vietnamese-American and a 28-year-old Canadian, who collapsed in separate incidents. The authorities said both the deceased individuals had drugs in their blood.
In the wake of the incidents, Cherng Talay Police increased security checks at the festival. This resulted in the arrests of foreign nationals from Japan, Malaysia and Myanmar and anumber of Thai nationals for dealing or possessing illegal drugs.
The deaths and arrests have sparked concerns about drug safety protocols at major music festivals in Thailand. Local reports said that authorities have announced a review of security measures for future events.
The EDC Thailand 2025, which ran from January 17-19, featured a lineup of over 90 international DJs, including renowned artists such as Skrillex, Afrack and Illenium. EDC was launched in California in 1997 and has over the years hosted editions in Mexico, the UK, Brazil and several other countries.
The fatalities come just weeks after Malaysia announced a temporary suspension of permits for upcoming events after four people died after attending the Pinkfish Countdown event.
