Maharashtra police have issued new directions for ticketing platforms to help prevent the resale of tickets at astronomical prices, following issues around the sale of tickets for the recent Coldplay concerts in India.

The cyber division of the state police force reportedly issued new guidelines that say a person who has purchased a ticket cannot resell if they are no longer unable to attend.

Ticket-selling platforms are now required to print the name of the individual on the pass at the time of issuing tickets. The ticket-holder’s identity will then be checked when they enter the venue.

Ticket-holders will only be able to cancel a ticket if they can no longer attend an event, and they will not be transferable.

Maharashtra Cyber Cell chief Yashasvi Yadav said that these regulations were aimed at concerts and events that were particularly popular – as was the case with the Coldplay shows. The band performed three gigs in Mumbai, which is the capital of the state of Maharashtra, as part of their long-running Music of the Spheres World Tour.

BookMyShow, which was the official ticketing partner for the British band’s first tour of India in eight years, faced criminal complaints last year after some claimed the platform was working with resale sites to profit from extortionate prices.

Chief executive Ashish Hemrajani dismissed claims BookMyShow aided ticket scalping, but admitted that the platform was underprepared for the sales which attracted millions of fans.
