The milestone was reached with a record crowd of 14,288 at the Minnesota Frost versus New York Sirens match at Little Caesars Arena in Detroit yesterday.
“Reaching one million fans is a huge milestone for our league,” said PWHL executive vice-president of hockey operations, Jayna Hefford
“To see the league grow so rapidly is a reflection of the dedication of our players, who demonstrate their world-class talent every day, as well as the countless individuals behind the scenes who work relentlessly to ensure the league’s success.
“The passion and support from our fans has been incredible, and this is only the beginning.”
Takeover Tour works wonders
The PWHL’s total league attendance currently stands at 1,001,648 fans in just over 14 months since the league’s launch on January 1 last year.
The Frost and Sirens game was part of the league’s “Takeover Tour” and also set a new US attendance record for professional women’s ice hockey, the fourth time that the PWHL has broken the record.
The previous single-game attendance record previously stood at 14,018 from a match at Denver’s Ball Arena between the Minnesota Frost and Montreal Victoire.
The Takeover Tour features nine matches played at neutral venues across North America aimed at increasing the league’s popularity.
