‘Good Night, and Good Luck’ grossed nearly $3.8m (£2.9m/€3.3m) last week, beating its own previous $3.3m record as the highest-grossing non-musical play in Broadway history.
The production was written by George Clooney and Grant Heslov, adapted from their 2005 film of the same name. The play is about American broadcast journalist and war correspondent Edward R. Murrow, and stars Clooney in his Broadway debut.
According to reports, the average cost for a seat to watch the play was $303.40, with premium seats hitting as high as $825. Taking place at the 1,537-seat Winter Garden Theatre, the play is directed by David Cromer. The play is also making more money than any play in the venue’s long history which dates back to 1911.
The previous record-holder was the 2022 revival of ‘The Music Man’ starring Hugh Jackman. The production raked in $3.5m during a regular eight-performance weekly gross, however ‘The Music Man’ still holds the house record for a special nine-performance week with $3.9m.
The $3.78m house record from ‘Good Night, and Good Luck’ was achieved during its first full week of performances, after it opened earlier this month.
