Fyre Festival 2 has been postponed indefinitely, with ticket-holders to be issued a full refund.
The event was somewhat doomed from the start given its history – founder Billy McFarland served four years in prison for fraud for the inadequacy of the first festival – and the fact that the tourist board of its original supposed location had no idea of Fyre Festival 2.
McFarland announced in February that the event would take place on Isla Mujeres, an island off Cancun, Mexico between May 30 and June 2. SoldOut.com was announced as the festival’s exclusive ticketing partner.
However, the tourism directorate of Isla Mujeres, Edgar Gasca, said that local officials had no knowledge of the event.
Plans then changed as the event was supposedly set to head to Playa Del Carmen, though this was reportedly denied once again by the Mexican city’s officials. It was revealed earlier this month that the permit McFarland had obtained only allowed for a 12-hour listening party for fewer than 300 people, with no live music – further leaving people in doubt.
Fyre Festival has now emailed ticket-holders and said: “The event has been postponed and a new date will be announced. We have issued you a refund. Once the new date is announced, at that time, you can repurchase if it works for your schedule.”
The first edition of Fyre Festival was billed as a luxury music event over two weekends on a private beach in the Bahamas in 2017, organised by McFarland and American rapper Ja Rule. The event was promoted on social media by actors, influencers and models, but during Fyre Festival’s first weekend the event experienced issues related to security, accommodation, food, medical services and more. The festival was eventually cancelled.
