Gold Coast pinpoints ‘affordable’ prices for Commonwealth Games tickets

Organisers of the 2018 Commonwealth Games in Gold Coast, Australia have announced a ticketing strategy which they believe is “inclusive, accessible and affordable”.

Gold Coast 2018 said more than half of tickets will be priced below AUS$40 (£24/$30/€27) when the ticket request phase launches in April.

Adult athletics tickets start at AUS$20 for adults, with swimming from AUS$40 and cycling from AUS$50, with tickets for under-16s at half the price. Opening and Closing Ceremonies are priced at AUS$100 and AUS$70 respectively, and tickets include all fees and free public transport on event days.

“The Queensland Government is firmly committed to ensuring Gold Coast 2018 is affordable and accessible for everyone,” said Annastacia Palaszczuk MP, Premier of Queensland, in a statement.

“Gold Coast 2018 will be affordable for families and that means more people can share in what is sure to be a terrific experience.”

Gold Coast 2018 claim they expect 1.5 million spectators to attend the Games, which are due to take place from April 4 to 15, 2018.

The 2014 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow attracted 1.2 million spectators, with two-thirds of all tickets priced at £25 or less.

“Gold Coast 2018 has worked with the industry and partners to deliver a world-class ticketing programme,” said Peter Beattie, Gold Coast 2018 chairman.

“We want passionate fans in every seat, so the ticket prices are inclusive, accessible and affordable to make it easy for everyone to enjoy the Games.

“Gold Coast 2018 is about the future generation and we want as many children as possible to experience the Commonwealth Games.”
