China to overtake US box office

China is set to replace the US as the world’s biggest cinema box office next year.

Chinese ticket sales will increase by 22% to $10.4bn in 2017 according to projections from IHS Markit and PricewaterhouseCoopers reported by the Bloomberg news agency.

That figure would push the Chinese market just above the $10.2bn average prediction for the US.

The forecast comes despite China’s box office posting just one month of year-on-year growth since April.

However, ticket sales are still up 13% during the first seven months of the year after the success of movies such as romantic comedy ‘The Mermaid’ and science fiction epic ‘Warcraft’.

Analysts believe the release of movies such as ‘Jason Bourne’ and ‘Star Trek’ towards the end of 2016 will generate an overall 22% year-on-year rise in revenues to $8.6bn.
