Final batch of Rio 2016 tickets snapped up, but plenty remain on sale

Over 100,000 tickets for the Rio 2016 summer Olympic Games were sold yesterday (Thursday), organisers have confirmed.

The final batch of tickets went on sale yesterday morning and were sold-out within four-and-a-half hours. The most popular events were athletics, basketball, beach volleyball, football and tennis.

Last-minute fans also purchased tickets for the opening and closing ceremonies, as well as swimming events.

“We are very pleased with the rush for Olympic tickets experienced today,” Rio 2016 ticketing director Donovan Ferreti said. “We know that Brazilians are last-minute buyers and it is fantastic to see that the excitement and anticipation for the Games is now reaching its peak.

Despite yesterday’s rush, a large amount of tickets for other events – most notably the men’s 100m final – remain on sale, with reports earlier in the week suggesting around 1.7m tickets were yet to be snapped up.

Ferreti added: “There are still tickets available across many sports, including finals, and fans are encouraged to enter the ticket portal as soon as possible to join us on this journey.”

The Rio Games will take place from August 5-21.
