Hamilton smashes Broadway box office record

Broadway sensation Hamilton has set a new record for weekly ticket sales revenue in New York.

The Lin-Manuel Miranda hip-hop musical grossed $3.3m (£2.6m/€3.1m) for its eight performances last week, according to the New York Times newspaper. The previous record was set by Wicked in 2013, although that figure was generated by nine shows.

Hamilton, which is based on the life of US founding father Alexander Hamilton, also set a record for the highest premium ticket price charged by a Broadway box office – $998 – although tickets on secondary sites have exchanged hands for more than $2,000.

Thirteen shows grossed more than $1m during the Thanksgiving week, while The Lion King, Wicked and Aladdin joined Hamilton in exceeding $2m.

According to figures released by the Broadway League, the 34 shows running during the week that ended on Sunday grossed $35.3m, making it the highest-grossing Thanksgiving week.
