Leeds United ends controversial ‘pie tax’ scheme

English second-tier Championship football club Leeds United has confirmed that it is freezing its ticket prices for the upcoming season, with the so-called ‘pie tax’ no longer included in the cost for some supporters.

Midway through last season, Leeds forced fans located in the South Stand of its Elland Road stadium to pay £5 more for their ticket than originally advertised. The move was designed to encourage supporters to redeem the ticket for a free food or drink item.

The scheme proved unpopular among fans and became known as the pie tax. Some supporters even made their feelings known during games by throwing pies onto the pitch.

However, Leeds earlier this week confirmed that it has scrapped the initiative. The club said in a statement that “meal deal structures have been simplified across all stands to help speed up service”.

For the 2016-17 season, pre-bought adult match tickets will range from £28-41 for Category A fixtures, and from £25-£39 for Category B fixtures.
