Record ticket sales at Edinburgh Festival

The total attendance at Edinburgh’s International Festival is up 12 per cent year-on-year, with ticket sales topping £4m for the first time, organisers have announced.

The annual arts and entertainment festival, which takes place every August, is estimated to have attracted more than 440,000 visitors and generated £4.2m (€4.9/$5.5m) in ticket sales this year, according to the Herald newspaper.

“At the end of three incredible weeks, all that remains is for us to thank the hundreds of artists and hundreds of thousands of audience members who continue to make the Edinburgh International Festival one of the wonders of the arts world,” the festival’s director, Fergus Linehan, said.

“The International Festival has always been a place for people of all nationalities to meet and exchange ideas and we’ve seen that everywhere across the city these past three weeks.”

The festival attracted more than 2,400 artists from 36 countries. There was particular interest in the Queen’s Hall series of classical music events, which registered a record year as part of the festivities.

About 27,000 people attended the opening event, while an audience of about 250,000 watched the closing fireworks concert.
