Teachers offered free seats to encourage theatre trips

Primary school teachers in London are being encouraged to organise more theatre trips through the offer of free tickets to hit West End show The Gruffalo.

The scheme was set up by Tall Stories theatre company which noticed a fall in term-time attendance by school groups.

Primary schools in the capital will be eligible to apply for two tickets for teachers to visit weekday performances in summer in the hope they will return with their classes in autumn.

Tall Stories co-artistic director Toby Mitchell told the Evening Standard newspaper: “The decreasing number of schools willing to take children to the theatre is an area of concern. It’s special, they’re excited, they’re going out of school and experiencing theatre as adults do.”

Headteacher Seamus Gibbons told the Standard: “With tightening school budgets impacting on school provision, it is a real luxury to be able to bring our children to the theatre.”

Meanwhile, the Guiting Music Festival in Gloucestershire is to offer free tickets to under-19s. The offer will cover the festival’s evening and outdoor events for the rest of 2016. Accompanying adults will be required to pay the standard price.
