West End producers lead calls for touting clampdown

Top London West End producer Sonia Friedman is leading renewed calls for greater government intervention in the secondary ticketing market, according to The Stage.

Friedman has been joined by Cameron Mackintosh managing director Nicholas Allott and Playful Productions’ Matthew Byam Shaw to demand a crackdown on touts snapping up tickets to shows in bulk and then posting them on secondary websites at inflated prices.

In a joint statement with her co-producer for Harry Potter and the Cursed Child, Colin Callender, Friedman said that she was continuing the “policy of policing the secondary market to educate our customers”.

Many fans of Harry Potter were left disappointed earlier this week when 60,000 tickets for the show were made available, only for a significant portion to end up on secondary websites minutes after going on sale.

Friedman has previously suggested that customers who purchase resale tickets for the show will be turned away.

“As producers, there is only so much we can do without the government enforcing the current legislation along with bringing in stronger measures to target touts on the secondary market specifically,” she said.

“We are adding our voice to the significant pressure from the entertainment industry to raise awareness of the issue and make this a key priority.”
