MP calls for cheap Premier League tickets for under 22s

An MP has introduced a bill that would require English Premier League football clubs to offer 10 per cent of tickets at discounted rates to fans aged 22 and under.

Labour's Justin Madders, who represents Ellesmere Port and Neston, will introduce his Football Supporters (Access) Bill in the House of Commons tomorrow (Wednesday).

Madders’ Private Members’ Bill comes soon after the BBC Price of Football Survey found that the cheapest tickets for England’s top-tier football league cost an average of £29 ($36/€34).

But while the Premier League itself has imposed a £30 cap on away tickets, Madders wants to encourage a discussion about ensuring young people have access to watch football at an affordable level.

Madders told the Press Association: "The average age of a Premier League fan is 41, maybe a bit higher. What we're saying is 10 per cent of all tickets should be discounted for those under 22. That way you've got the next generation of fans involved and engaged.

"Because if they're not used to going in their 20s, why would they start going in their 40s?''

As well as its focus on ticket prices, Madders’ bill would also introduce a levy on transfer fees to raise cash for grassroots football facilities. Local councils would also have to assess transport arrangements before agreeing to early or late kick-off times.
