Shubert nets ticket deal for major new New York attraction

Shubert Ticketing has become the exclusive ticketing partner of National Geographic’s new entertainment experience in New York’s Times Square.

National Geographic ENCOUNTER: Ocean Odyssey, located in one of the busiest tourist locations in the world, is expected to attract huge numbers of visitors, who will be able to virtually interact with ocean creatures.

The all-sensory experience is being produced by SPE Partners, a New York-based entertainment developer, under a licensing agreement with National Geographic Partners. The team of Academy Award, Grammy, and Emmy-winning composers, sound engineers, and designers includes the Oscar-winning visual effects team behind HBO’s Game of Thrones and Martin Scorsese’s Hugo.

Last year, Shubert’s central platform processed sales of 12 million tickets, totalling over $1bn (£800m/€958m), via box offices, online, by phone, and through hundreds of third-party agents.

“We’re excited to be able to provide our comprehensive ticketing technology to SPE Partners and help bring National Geographic to the heart of New York City,” said David Andrews, senior vice-president of Shubert.

“Adding such a prestigious client to the growing list of venues and attractions that use our powerful ticketing technology is very exciting, and we’re excited about bringing our passion for innovation to this new Times Square destination.”

Shubert said SPE Partners will be able to access its vast ticket distribution network, which provides inventory and sales tools to consumer groups and the wholesale travel industry via specially developed software. Shubert said these distributors will help National Geographic ENCOUNTER: Ocean Odyssey, which is due to open next autumn, reach potential buyers in markets around the world.

“National Geographic’s long-standing prominence as a global leader in exploration and storytelling combined with Shubert’s historic presence in the New York entertainment and theatrical community create yet another dynamic element in this exciting venture,” said Alexander Svezia, co-founding partner of SPE Partners.

“We are thrilled to bring together these two iconic institutions for the first time to launch this immersive experience that pushes the boundaries of entertainment in new directions."
