A third of Rio Olympics tickets unsold

Brazil’s Sports Minister has admitted that almost a third of tickets are still to be sold for this year’s Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro, which starts in less than a month.

Leonardo Picciani confirmed just 70% of tickets had been sold for the event, which begins on August 5.

Picciani attempted to calm fears that have contributed to poor sales, from economic and political meltdown in the country to concerns over the Zika virus and pollution.

Referring to the Zika virus, which has caused several golfers to withdraw from the Games, Picciani said: “Forty-three test events have been held in multiple sports with 7,000 athletes and no cases of Zika or dengue fever have been recorded. We don’t expect any of the sports to be at risk of Zika contamination during the Games.”
