UFC breaking ticket resale records

This weekend’s first-ever Ultimate Fight Championship (UFC) event in New York City looks certain to break ticket resale records for the mixed martial arts (MMA) series.

Until March of this year, MMA fights were illegal in New York State, but recent law changes mean that bouts are now legal in all 50 states and Saturday’s UFC 205 event at Madison Square Garden is a huge draw.

TicketIQ reports that the average asking price for tickets is about $2,093 (£1,700/€1,900), which is nearly double the price of their previously most expensive bout, UFC 137 in Las Vegas in 2011.

Marketplace Ticket City said the median ticket price on the secondary market for UFC 205 is $971, around $300 more than UFC 200, which had previously held their record. The original face value of the tickets ranged from $106 to $1,500, but as of Monday the cheapest seat for sale through Ticketmaster was $800.

Individual tickets to UFC 205 are being listed on StubHub for as high as $25,000 each. The maximum sale price currently on Ticket City for the event is $12,550, which is expected to rise closer to the event.

Last month TickTechNews reported that UFC expects to take advantage of New York City’s high ticket-price culture to lead to a record $15m from “live event revenue” being generated at UFC 205.
