Tokyo 2020 hits 4m ticket applications

Organisers of the Tokyo 2020 Olympic and Paralympic Games claim that more than four million people have now registered on the ticketing site for the domestic lottery.

The initial ticketing phase for those living in Japan will run until May 28. A lottery system will be deployed, with the successful applicants informed on June 20.

Tokyo 2020 has confirmed a total of 4,831,688 people have now registered with the Games ticketing site. It is believed that more than two million registrations had been submitted prior to the lottery launch on May 9, with that figure doubling in less than two weeks.

Between 70 and 80 per cent of the total allocation has been reserved for domestic sales, with Tokyo 2020’s original bid saying that 7.8 million tickets would be up for grabs.

However, organisers at this stage have refused to say how many are set to go on sale in the initial phase.

Prospective spectators in other countries will then be able to apply through authorised ticket resellers (ATR) in different countries, with each National Olympic Committee being allocated a certain number of tickets to be distributed via its ATR. International ticket sales are not allowed to begin until June 15.

The cheapest individual tickets for the Games will cost Y2,500 (£17.17/€19.86/$22.34).

The Tokyo 2020 Olympics will run from July 24 to August 9.
