GMG Productions targets $50m sales in Asia

GMG Productions, the newly launched international West End and Broadway tour producer, is targeting more than $50m worth of ticket sales in the Asia region in the next five years.

GMG Productions, which is based in the Philippines, will present shows across the region, including in Hong Kong, Singapore and New Zealand.

Carlos Candal, the founder of theatre merchandising company Global Marketing Group, will lead the venture. Partners and investors in GMG Productions include Robert Sewell, who is the founder of ticketing company TicketWorld, Crossroads Live, through its London-based affiliate David Ian Productions; and Richard Lewis of Limelight Productions, which specialises in children’s theatre.

Candal told The Stage that GMG is looking to sell more than $50m worth of tickets in the next five years.

He added: “GMG Productions’ core vision and mission is to bring top-quality theatrical productions to South East Asia. This is an exciting opportunity to establish a new presenting company with David Ian and Bob Sewell to bring the highest calibre shows to the region with our combined, long-standing relationships with the world’s leading theatrical producers.”

The first production taken on by GMG Productions was Cats in Manila in October, which the collapsed Lunchbox Theatrical Productions had been due to present.

Lunchbox, which was one of the biggest presenters of touring shows in the South East Asian region, left alleged debts of more than £5m for its work on shows when it stopped business at the end of 2019.

Candal told The Stage that GMG Productions is “looking to build on the market that was there and in a lot of respects improve it”.
