The Louvre (pictured) in Paris is set to increase its basic entrance fee by 29% next year, ahead of the French capital’s staging of the Olympic and Paralympic Games.

Paris’ famous art museum – the most visited in the world – is home to the Mona Lisa. As reported by Reuters, bosses confirmed in a statement that its entrance fee would increase from January to €22 (£19/$24), up from the current €17.

This will be the first time since 2017 that the basic entrance fee has been increased.

The Louvre said that the price increase was to account for the rising energy costs, while also funding free entry for certain groups including those under the age of 18, teachers and journalists.

Paris is set to host the Olympic Games from July 26 to August 11, while the Paralympics will take place from August 28 to September 8.

Not only does the price hike coincide with a busy year for Paris, but the Art Forum news outlet reported that it reflects the plan of current Louvre director Laurence des Cars.

Des Cars is aiming to reshape the museum and make it more welcoming to locals, with daily visitors capped at 30,0000, down from 2019’s high of 45,000.
