AFL most well-attended sport in Australia in 2023

The Australian Football League (AFL) was the most well-attended sport last year in the country, with crowds reaching almost 8.1 million.

The figure is almost double that of the National Rugby League (NRL), while millions of fans also watched the Australian women’s team at the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup (which was hosted across Australia and New Zealand), and last year’s Formula 1 grand prix.

April’s grand prix drew 131,124 guests to race day at Melbourne’s Albert Park, making it the highest-attended standalone sporting event in Australia since 2006, according to Austadiums. It was also last year’s best-attended sporting event in the country.

The list of the top five highest attended sports competitions was rounded off by the Women’s World Cup with an attendance of 1.98 million, the A-League with 1.35 million and the Big Bash League (BBL) with 1.05 million.

Aside from three days of last year’s F1 grand prix, the fourth best-attended sports event was the AFL Grand Final between Collingwood v Brisbane Lions with 100,000. The fifth spot was held by the AFL Preliminary Final between Collingwood and GWS Giants with the 97,665 attendees.

The highest-attended venues were the Melbourne Cricket Ground (pictured) with 3.7 million guests, Marvel Stadium with 1.6 million and Perth’s Optus Stadium with 1.5 million, while the Adelaide Oval and Suncorp Stadium were tied with 1.3 million.

Additional stadiums in the list included Accor Stadium, Allianz Stadium, AAMI Park, Sydney Cricket Ground and the Gabba.
