Cheltenham attendance expected to be down on last year

Cheltenham Festival attendance is predicted to see a decrease once again this year, after 2023’s event also witnessed a 14% fall in crowd numbers.

This is according to Ian Renton, regional director for Cheltenham and the South West at The Jockey Club, which manages the racecourse.

As reported by the Guardian, Renton told Racing TV that “we are going to be a few down on last year”. This also follows a 14% decrease in 2023 on the back of a four-day record of 280,267 in 2022.

In February the Racing Post reported that Cheltenham Gold Cup day tickets were on the verge of selling out, but the publication did concede that sales in other areas were lagging behind at the time. Sales have seemingly not improved in the last three weeks.

According to the BBC, some 250,000 spectators are still expected to attend across the four days of horse racing at the Gloucestershire racecourse.

Seven races are scheduled to take place today (Tuesday), the opening day of the festival.
