The Women’s Super League and Women’s Championship have welcomed more than one million football fans through the gates this season.
The WSL and Women’s Championship are the top and second tier of women’s football in England, respectively.
It is the second time this season that the previous cumulative attendance record of 689,297 (set during the 2022-23 campaign) has been broken.
The WSL’s attendance record was broken last month, with a total of 717,721 fans watching a game so far this season.
Thanks to the latest round of matches across the two divisions, the number of attendees has broken through the seven-figure mark for the first time. More than half of the 24 clubs in the two leagues have also achieved their own record league attendance, including a highest-ever cumulative attendance across the second tier.
“We’re thrilled to have broken through the one million mark for our cumulative attendance across our leagues,” said Nikki Doucet, chief executive of the Women’s Super League and Women’s Championship.
“Huge credit must go to our clubs and the work they have done in this space – whether it’s the players on the field or those working behind the scenes, this has been an incredible collective effort across the board.
“This season has been one to remember for so many reasons, but surpassing one million in attendance across the Barclays Women’s Super League and Barclays Women’s Championship really does speak volumes about the interest in women’s football in this country.”
Doucet added: “This is only the beginning of our journey however, and we’re so excited to see these records hopefully be broken time and time again in the years to come as our game continues to grow.”
The Women’s Championship came to a close last weekend with Crystal Palace Women clinching the title and securing promotion to the WSL for the first time. The WSL will run until May 18.
