R&A warning over Open tickets and packages

Organisers of the Open Championship golf major have warned fans not to purchase tickets from unofficial sources ahead of the 2017 event at Royal Birkdale in Merseyside.

The R&A is warning golf fans not to fall victim to misleading sales practices by unofficial operators selling tickets and hospitality products.

Johnnie Cole-Hamilton, executive director (championships) at The R&A, said there have been numerous complaints in recent years from spectators who have been misled when purchasing packages from suppliers. Some of the problems encountered include hospitality deals that did not actually include entry to the course.

“We are working closely with a number of partners including Merseyside Police to ensure that fraud-prevention measures are in place and our fans are protected,” said Cole-Hamilton. “We will employ a no readmission system this year to provide a safer experience for our spectators and try to prevent them falling victim to misleading sales tactics.

“We are very much looking forward to welcoming more than 200,000 spectators to Royal Birkdale next summer and want to ensure that they have the best possible experience while watching the world’s best players competing for the Claret Jug.”
