Coventry fans group calls for ticket boycott

A Coventry City fans group is calling for a boycott of season tickets for the next campaign in an escalation of animosity between supporters and the English League One football club’s owners.

‘Preservation Sky Blues’, which also called on Coventry fans to not purchase season tickets ahead of the current campaign, said the boycott was the best means of protesting against the way the club is being managed by owners Sisu, a London hedge fund.

While some supporters are concerned that a lack of support would be detrimental to the club’s on-field fortunes, Preservation Sky Blues is adamant that the best way to remove Sisu as owners is to stop funding the club.

“Since our attempt to start a season ticket boycott campaign in 2015 we have continued to be dragged through the gutter by our horrific heartless owners Sisu,” a Preservation Sky Blues spokesperson said in a statement. “What more evidence do we as fans need from Sisu to realise they couldn’t give a damn about CCFC, its history or its fans, their own paying customers.

“While us fans continue to pay for this brand of football this nightmare will only continue to get worse. We are indeed our own worse enemies. Something has to give but in our case we have to stop giving!

“Sadly the only way we can hurt Sisu and show we are serious is by boycotting season ticket sales for 2017/18 season as well as match ticket sales from now on moving forward.

“It’s time for us fans to vote with our feet. It’s now long over due for Sisu to put their hands up and put this club back on the market before it’s too late!

“We urge fans to make it crystal clear that you will not renew your season tickets and back the season ticket boycott.”

More than 19,000 people have signed a petition calling on the hedge fund to sell the 1987 FA Cup winners, which have been outside the top-tier Premier League since relegation in 2001.

Fans have taken part in a number of demonstrations before and during games this season. On Saturday, before a match against MK Dons, a mock funeral was held outside the Ricoh Arena to mark the ‘death’ of the club.

Coventry’s average attendance at its 32,000-seat home ground so far during 2016-17 is just 9,100.
