Chicago Cubs fans warned over World Series tickets

Illinois Attorney General Lisa Madigan has issued a warning to Chicago Cubs fans ahead of the Major League Baseball team’s appearance at the World Series, urging supporters to ensure they are buying tickets from approved sellers.

Madigan said that fans should avoid purchasing tickets from individuals on websites such as Craigslist as there is a chance they could be fraudulent. Instead they should look for more reputable sellers, she said.

The Attorney General also recommended that fans do not purchase tickets from private parties and not pay in cash, as card payments can be tracked and offer a more secure approach. Fans are also urged not to participate in wire transfers and to properly investigate any sellers before making a purchase.

For ticket-brokers based in Illinois, consumers can contact the Illinois Secretary of State’s Index Department in Springfield to ensure that the broker is registered.

“Cubs fans have been waiting a lifetime to see their team play in the World Series, but don’t let the quest to ‘Fly the W’ let you fall victim to an expensive scam,” Madigan said.

The Cubs qualified for this season’s World Series against the Cleveland Indians after defeating the Los Angeles Dodgers in the sixth game of the National League championship series. It is the first time the Cubs have competed in the contest since 1945, a record 71-year absence from the series.
