MLS success leads to record season-ticket sales for Toronto FC

MLS Cup finalists Toronto FC have seen record season-ticket sales following their successful 2016 season.

The Canada-based club said ticket sales are at their highest since it entered the MLS in 2007. With three months until the start of the 2017 season, the club has surpassed season-ticket sales of 18,673 for 2016, having already reached the 19,000 mark.

Despite losing to Seattle Sounders in the championship match earlier this month, the club’s run to the final and acquisition of stars such as Sebastian Giovinco, Michael Bradley and Jozy Altidore has led to a spike in interest among fans in the Canadian city.

The club’s potential was also illustrated by it attracting record crowds of more than 36,000 for the final two games of the season thanks to the addition of temporary seating at BMO Field, which usually has a capacity of 30,000.

"There's a lot of excitement about this team," club president Bill Manning told the Times Colonist newspaper.

"I said this a year ago — winning is the No. 1 priority that you need to have. Because when you win and you have a good product on the field, you sell more tickets, you sell more season-tickets, you sell more sponsorships. And those things are very important, the business part of a Major League Soccer franchise is very important, because then it allows us to make DP decisions and it allows us to go scout all over the world and it allows us the financial resources to do that.”
