Rio 2016 organisers struggle to complete ticket refunds

Organisers of the Rio 2016 summer Olympic and Paralympic Games are still trying to find 13,000 people in order to process almost $3m (£2.4m/€2.8m) in ticket refund payments, according to the Associated Press news agency.

Some 140,000 people returned tickets for Rio 2016 for resale, with the total value of the tickets being $23.5m.

Although about 90 per cent of the refunds have been completed, incorrect bank details and credit card numbers have prevented a portion of former ticket-holders from being reimbursed.

“We are hunting after people,” Rio 2016 spokesman Mario Andrada told the Associated Press. “We have the money, but don't know how to get it to them. Instead of selling them to scalpers, they gave the tickets back to us, and we resold them.”

According to Andrada, 99.9 per cent of the outstanding refunds are due to Brazilians, but organisers have struggled to get in touch with people, despite reaching out through social media and advertising in newspapers.

The organising committee will officially dissolve in August 2017.
