iPhone 7 to extend Apple Pay coverage

Japanese consumers will soon be able to buy tickets and other products through Apple Pay thanks to the launch of the new iPhone 7, which is set to be unveiled later today (Wednesday).

According to a report in the Nikkei newspaper, Apple is to use Sony’s contactless FeliCa technology to piggyback onto the infrastructure already present in the country.

The US technology giant will team with FeliCa Networks to make the iPhone compatible with the technology, likely by adding a feature letting it communicate with FeliCa readers. iPhone users, who account for half of the Japanese smartphone market, will be able to use Apple Pay for contactless payment as they can in the US, UK, China and a number of other countries.

It is believed the new service will be launched in Japan next year once Apple has negotiated fees with financial institutions and retailers.
