Evenko fined in Quebec for breaking consumer laws

Major Canadian promoter and ticket vendor Evenko has been fined more than CAN$10,000 ($7,500/£6,000/€6,700) for violating consumer laws in Quebec.

Another operator, Billets de Qualité Inc, was also prosecuted by Quebec’s consumer protection office for charging more than the advertised price for event tickets without permission.

The Office de la Protection du Consommateur (OPC) case against Evenko related to concerts in 2014 featuring Charles Aznavour and Enrique Iglesias. Evenko’s website failed to highlight a charge of $5 to email the ticket or $7 to have it mailed, since consumers did not have the option of picking them up for free at the ticket counter.

As the province’s law states that the listed price for any event must include all costs except taxes, Evenko pleaded guilty to the infraction and was fined $10,056.

Montreal-based marketplace Billets de qualité was fined $2,514 after pleading guilty to selling tickets for hockey games in 2013 for up to $90 more than the listed price. It is illegal to sell tickets for more than the listed price in Quebec without authorisation from the event promoter.

The fine comes a month after Billets.com and 514-Billets were fined more than $5,000 each for the same infraction.
