Rio round-up – August 8

Each day we take a look at the main stadia and ticketing news from the 2016 Olympic Games:

  • A bomb disposal team was called in to deal with two suspect packages at the Volleyball Arena in Copacabana during Friday night’s opening ceremony. The packages were found to be safe.
  • Three unauthorised drones were reportedly seen flying above the Maracanã during the opening ceremony.
  • A stray bullet was found in the press area of the equestrian venue at Deodoro Stadium on Saturday. Nobody was hurt, and officials insisted the venue had not been a target.
  • Games spokesman Mario Andrada apologised to supporters that were subjected to lengthy security checks during the first full day of events on Saturday. Some fans ended up missing the start of events.
  • Strong winds resulted in a fabric panel being dislodged from the side of the Aquatics Stadium on Sunday.
  • Adverse weather conditions at Lagoa Rodrigo de Freitas resulted in Sunday’s entire rowing programme being cancelled. Heats were able to resume on Monday.
