Manchester United are set to play in front of empty seats at Old Trafford when they host Young Boys in the UEFA Champions League tonight.
The club, who lie seventh in the Premier League table following their disappointing draw against Crystal Palace on Saturday, is offering tickets on general sale in three out of four stands at their 74,994-capacity stadium. The tickets are available for between £45 and £58.
United have an average attendance of 73,758 – around 1,250 short of capacity – for their two European games so far this season against Valencia and Juventus. However, officials expect fewer fans for the game with the Swiss team, despite United being able to progress to the knockout stages of the competition should they win.
United have won just three of their six home games so far this season, however their average attendance is 74,481 – just 500 short of capacity. The club’s average attendance was 75,102 last season and 75,305 in 2016-17, with the club’s capacity having been reduced to accommodate more disabled seating areas.
Last year it was reported that the club is considering expanding the capacity of Old Trafford to 88,000 seats, which would make the Premier League club’s home the second-largest stadium in Europe.
