Fifa unveils mobile tickets breakthrough

Mobile tickets are to be used for a major global football tournament for the first time following an announcement by governing body Fifa.

Fans will be able to use smartphone devices to store their mobile tickets for the Fifa U-20 World Cup 2017, which takes place between May and June in South Korea.

Fifa said tickets will be available on paper and mobile, with the newly-adopted method “expected to reduce any inconvenience in the ticket receiving process and mark the tournament as an eco-friendly tournament by using less paper”. The governing body added that the mobile ticket will be served in mobile phone applications, available in the Korean language.

Tickets, which went on sale to Visa card holders on Monday, cost between $6 (£4.8/€5.7) and $42.

Local Organising Committee (LOC) chairman Chung Monggyu said: “As the year of Fifa U-20 World Cup is coming and there are only just over three months away, I feel an increasing interest in the tournament from the public. The LOC is putting a great deal of effort into the tournament in cooperation with Fifa and the host cities. I hope the interest in the tournament leads to successful ticket sales.”
