Adele takes on Wembley scalpers with Twickets deal

Pop star Adele has intensified her war on ticket scalpers by signing up ‘face value’ exchange Twickets as the only official resale site for her forthcoming Wembley Stadium shows.

Only buyers whose names are printed on their tickets are guaranteed admission to her four concerts in London next July. The only way to change the name is to use Twickets, which does not let users offer tickets for more than their original sale price.

Tickets to see the singer went on sale earlier this month through Eventim and Adele’s own website and sold out within minutes. The tickets were soon being resold for £9,000 ($11,400/€10,800) – more than 200 times their face value.

However, a note on the official page for the Wembley shows warns: “Adele ticket holders who can no longer attend a show may sell them on to other fans through Twickets at no more than the price they originally paid. Resale of tickets through any channel other than Twickets will not be accepted; you risk having them cancelled and being denied entry to the show. This applies to all UK shows.”

The site instructs sellers to ensure they have the tickets in their possession before attempting to sell. Security staff will check tickets against IDs such as bank cards, driving licences or other documents. If the names fail to match, doormen may deny entry because the ticket holder is suspected of using a site Adele is attempting to penalise.

Twickets owner Richard Davies said: “Venues will only accept resale tickets where the person’s name matches the name on the tickets. The only place you can legitimately change the name on the ticket is on Twickets.”

Adele has regularly made her dislike of ticket touts known before, calling it “unacceptable” to con fans. Earlier this year, her managers called for ticket profiteering to be illegal.

MP Nigel Adams, a member of the Commons culture, media and sport select committee, has backed the actions of the singer, who was the biggest live music draw in North America during 2016.

According to the Daily Mail newspaper, Evans said: “I’m very pleased that Adele has taken this stance — it is one step towards thwarting industrial ticket touts that are ripping off genuine fans. I would encourage other artists to take Adele’s lead.”
