Desert Trip resellers can’t get no satisfaction

Ticket resellers look set to make a big loss on this month’s sold-out Desert Trip festival that features rock legends such as The Rolling Stones, Bob Dylan and Paul McCartney.

Three-day tickets for the California two-weekend event went on sale for $399 (£314/€356) earlier this year but are now on offer for as little as $188 on StubHub and $165 on Ticket City.

Tickets costing as much as $1,599 sold out in hours when they were first released in May, with Billboard estimating that Desert Trip could generate record total sales of $150m.

The event, produced by AEG subsidiary Goldenvoice, is being held at the Empire Polo Club in Indio, California, which is the same site as the Coachella music festival. It is believed McCartney, the Stones and Roger Waters are to earn $7m for their appearances, while Dylan, Neil Young and The Who are to each make more than $1m.
