Global football fans snap up Confederations Cup tickets

Some 30,000 tickets were bought on the opening day of sales for the 2017 Fifa Confederations Cup in Russia.

In figures released by Fifa, world football’s governing body, the majority of purchases were made by residents of the host country, although significant sales were also registered in other countries that have qualified for the tournament.

Among those that will be competing in the tournament, which takes place next summer, are 2014 World Cup champion Germany, 2015 Copa America champion Chile, 2015 Asian Cup champion Australia, 2015 Gold Cup winner Mexico, Euro 2016 winner Portugal, and Nations Cup winner New Zealand. The remaining eighth nation will be determined following the 2017 Africa Cup of Nations.

“Overall, 30,000 tickets have been sold over the first day. Five percent of the tickets were bought by foreigners, with Chileans taking the lead with a big margin, followed by the fans of the German and US football teams,” said a Fifa spokesperson, according to the Tass news agency.

Tickets went on sale earlier this week to Visa credit card customers only.
