Viagogo facing criminal charges over Euro 2016 tickets

Uefa, the governing body of European football, has filed a criminal complaint against Viagogo, the online ticket marketplace, over claims it illegally sold tickets for Euro 2016 football matches.

The UK’s Guardian newspaper reported that French police raided a hotel room in Bordeaux earlier this month and found Viagogo staff handing out tickets to hundreds of customers for the quarter-final between Italy and Germany. The newspaper report added that prosecutors are now expected to open a case against Viagogo.

Euro 2016 tickets can only be bought legally through Uefa itself, with the governing body stressing that private selling of seats threatens safety due to segregation concerns.

A Uefa spokesman said: “Uefa have filed criminal complaints against Viagogo with the public prosecutor in several cities in France, and we are also undertaking civil proceedings against Viagogo before the Tribunal de Grande Instance de Paris [high court of Paris].”
