The cost of the average movie ticket in the US has risen to $8.95 from last year, a rise of close to 2.5 per cent, according to the National Association of Theatre Owners.
The addition of recliner seats in many cinemas led many people to pay higher prices to watch hit films such as Guardians of the Galaxy 2, Wonder Woman, Pirates of the Caribbean 5, Beauty and the Beast, and Fate of the Furious in 3D.
The price varies if people choose to go to premium venues, as well as when people decide not to attend discounted matinees. Theatre ticket prices have also increased.
AMC Entertainment and Regal Entertainment have raised prices as well as increasing the number of theatres offering recliner seats.
