Revenue from tickets sold for Qatar’s staging of the AFC Asian Cup 2023 will be donated to support Palestinian relief efforts, the Local Organising Committee (LOC) has revealed.

“As part of its belief in (the) ability of sports to bring about social change beyond the football pitch, the AFC Asian Cup Qatar 2023 Local Organising Committee (LOC) has agreed to donate revenue from tournament ticket sales to support urgent relief interventions in Palestine,” the LOC said in a social media post.

Israel first launched an attack on Hamas-run Gaza on October 7, after Hamas killed over 1,000 people, stormed a live music event and took more than 200 hostages. According to Gaza’s Hamas-run health ministry, some 13,300 people – including 5,000 children – have died as a result of Israel’s responding campaign so far.

The second batch of Asian Cup 2023 tickets have now been placed on sale, after the first phase – which launched early last month – saw all passes sell out quickly.

Qatar became the host of the delayed AFC Asian Cup after China relinquished hosting rights in 2022 due to ongoing challenges caused by the COVID-19 pandemic.

The football tournament is set to take place from January 12 to February 10, 2024.
