INAC Kobe Leonessa, a Japanese women’s football side, has allowed its spectators decide how much to pay for tickets after a match has been played.

According to Japanese news agency Kyodo News, each fan paid a minimum of 100 yen depending on their ‘level of satisfaction’ under the club’s ‘Shall We Pay?’ campaign following a match against Chifure AS Elfen Saitama. INAC Kobe was victorious in a WE League Cup group-stage match in September.

Some 1,298 spectators turned up to watch the game, with ticket sales – including advance ticket sales that were available at a set price – amounting to 887,001 yen (£4,878/€5,600/$5,924).

Kyodo News reported that one fan paid as much as 10,000 yen, while another attendee said they paid 1,000 yen for their first women’s football match at a stadium.

INAC Kobe has said it is planning to run the campaign again in the future.

“The women’s game has a different kind of appeal to the men’s,” Kobe captain Mina Tanaka told Kyodo News. “We need to have people come see us first.”

The WE League, officially known as the Japan Women’s Empowerment Professional Football League, is the top tier of women’s football in the country. It is also Japan’s first professional women’s football league, and launched during the 2021-22 season.
